I had a few memorable avian observations this past week, including a sighting of a scarlet tanager, my first catbird and a flicker love triangle. Unfortunately, I was without a sketchbook in hand but I wanted to remember so I did what I always tell my students to do. Take a picture in your mind and commit to memory. Draw it as quickly as you can when you get to paper. The results are less detailed and accurate than one wishes artistically but the existence of the image always brings one back to the moment one was present.
